Richie Hewitt

Topics: tangata whenua, Māori in the Upper Clutha

Richie Hewitt moved to Wānaka to manage the Bank of New Zealand -and fell in love with the place. He saw the need for an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) and so negotiated to obtain one - one of the first towns to have one.

In this interview, Richie talks about his strong interest in Pre European Māori history in the Upper Clutha. He has developed theories on how Māori lived, what they ate and how and where they cooked their food. He has recorded his thoughts, and collects papers written by others on “Māori in the Upper Clutha” and wants a team of Archaeologists to survey the area to confirm his theories.
