Catherine Little - Cardrona McDougalls

Topics: Chinese gold miners, historic family ties

The starting point for this conversation with the Reverend Catherine Little was a silk embroidered picture or hanging, handmade by Chinese gold miners in the Cardrona Valley. A wedding gift to her maternal grandfather, Robert McDougall (Jnr) on the occasion of his wedding to Christina Finlaison Sutherland in 1890, it read:

“The husband sings and the wife follows”.

“Robert McDougal, best wishes on the happy occasion.  We are your younger brothers, Chou, Wong…”

Catherine recounts her memories of her grandparents, and what she knows of the connection between her grandfather and the miners, as well as life in the Cardrona Valley in those early years.
