Helen Pledger
Topics: Tarras, community, regional development
Helen recalls her ‘idyllic childhood’ growing up on Bendigo Station, along with the challenges and joys of living in the Tarras community. After some years away, she returned to Tarras with her husband Colin, where they worked hard to make a living from a pottery business and raising cattle. Active in the community, Helen has served as a Justice of the Peace for 30 years and taken a particular interest in visiting young rural mothers for whom life was very isolating.
Helen goes on to talk about the changes she has seen in Tarras such as a reduction in services and the workforce and the growth of the wine industry. She then identifies changes to come: the airport, gold mining, new subdivision and a bike track.
